PranaChain wants to put your health data in your hands using blockchain

Rethink healthcare data ownership with blockchain, from secure, consent-driven record sharing to cross-border payments powered by its PRN token.
PranaChain

Imagine a world where your medical history travels with you securely, seamlessly, and under your complete control. No more missing test reports, incompatible hospital systems, or endless paperwork.

That’s exactly what PranaChain is building.

Launched in September 2025, this India-born digital health startup is using blockchain to fix healthcare’s most frustrating flaws. From siloed systems that don’t talk to each other to patients losing control of their own records.

It’s a secure, decentralized platform designed to put patients at the center of their Electronic Health Records (EHRs).

The founder’s vision: From ISRO to healthcare’s next leap

The story starts with Abhishek Chakrala, a former ISRO scientist turned startup consultant who’s worked with over 20 companies worldwide.

During a visit to his hometown, Tirupati, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, he noticed two glaring issues that millions of patients still face:

  • No access when it matters most: “People often forget or lose their medical documents while traveling, leaving doctors with half the picture,” he recalls.
  • No ownership of your own data: “In several Western countries, lab reports go directly to doctors, not patients. You have to chase your own information.”

That frustration became his mission: to give people true ownership of their health data, no matter where they are.

The solution: PranaChain, your medical data, decentralized

So, Chakrala built PranaChain, a next-generation, Web3 platform built on blockchain.

He built PranaChain with a mission to make it the digital backbone of global healthcare. It’s a decentralised medical ERP powered by Web3 that connects every stakeholder in one ecosystem:

  • Patients (the true data owners)
  • Hospitals & Doctors
  • Labs & Researchers
  • Pharma companies
  • Insurers

Everything runs on a secure, transparent, consent-driven blockchain network, giving patients control while keeping institutions compliant and connected.

The currency of care: PranaToken (PRN)

Cross-border healthcare payments are notoriously painful. High exchange fees, long delays, and endless red tape.

To solve that, PranaChain introduced its own cryptocurrency: the PranaToken (PRN). It is designed for secure, instant, low-cost payments with seamless transactions within its ecosystem.

It’s healthcare payments, reimagined for a borderless world.

From idea to global traction

What began as an idea in 2021 became reality in 2023, when PranaChain was bootstrapped with ₹22 lakh and a small team in India. In 2025, PranaChain was finally launched in the market.

The platform is in beta testing with trials in Indian clinics, and partnerships with both a Canadian startup incubator and a semi-government accelerator in Dubai.

For a bootstrapped startup, that’s a powerful early signal of global relevance.

The compliance challenge: Building for global standards

PranaChain claims to be fully compliant with major global regulations, including HIPAA (U.S.) and GDPR (E.U.). While blockchain’s inherent security helps, true compliance requires smart architectural design.

Here’s how the tech actually works behind the buzzwords:

Data storage: Hashing, not storing

To protect sensitive information, the blockchain itself doesn’t store your actual health data. Instead, it only stores a unique cryptographic “fingerprint” (a hash) of that data. Your real Protected Health Information (PHI) is kept in secure, encrypted off-chain storage.

The “right to be forgotten”

GDPR gives you the right to have your data erased. To comply, the system uses a “cryptographic erasure protocol.”

This doesn’t delete the immutable hash on the blockchain but permanently destroys the key needed to access your off-chain data, making it permanently inaccessible.

Patient consent is managed automatically by smart contracts. These digital agreements record your permissions and ensure your data is only accessed when you explicitly authorize it, directly addressing core principles of both HIPAA and GDPR.

Looking forward

PranaChain is rebooting how healthcare data should work. By combining blockchain, smart contracts, and decentralized identity, it’s building a system where your health history travels with you securely and instantly.

That said, PranaChain is still in its early days. It’s an emerging startup working with complex, untested technology in one of the toughest spaces: healthcare data. Real-world adoption, trust, and regulation will be the true tests of its promise.

But the idea is strong, the timing is right, and the potential is big. For investors and healthtech watchers, PranaChain is definitely one to keep an eye on. It’ll be interesting to see how this vision takes shape as it moves from concept to clinics.
