If you’ve ever cared for an aging parent or grandparent, you know the one worry that never really goes away: What happens when they wake up at night and try to walk in the dark?
For many families, that moment between “getting up” and “finding balance” is the most dangerous. A single misstep can lead to a serious fall.
The World Health Organization reports that 684,000 people die from falls every year, with millions more injured. Most of these incidents happen at home. And many happen at night.
Bide is created for exactly these moments. The small, quiet seconds that can change everything.
Here’s how this simple bedside device is helping older adults move safely and confidently at night.
What is Bide?
Bide is a compact, discreet fall-prevention device that sits on a bedside table and works automatically. No apps, no WiFi, no complexity.
Its purpose is simple: to help older adults move safely when they wake up at night.
Designed for both independent living and care settings, Bide blends into the bedroom, providing proactive nighttime support.

How Bide prevents falls before they happen
Nighttime falls usually occur when someone wakes up groggy, stands too quickly, or struggles to see in the dark. Bide steps in right at that vulnerable moment.
It works in four small but powerful steps:
1. It detects movement.
Light and motion sensors quietly identify when the person wakes up and is about to get out of bed.
2. It plays a familiar voice.
The device automatically plays a pre-recorded message from a loved one or caregiver. The calm, familiar voice helps reduce confusion, brings orientation, and reminds them to slow down and move safely.
3. It provides soft, guiding light.
A soft traffic light sequence illuminates the room. This gives the user enough visibility to orient themselves without the shock of bright lights.
4. It guides, not alarms.
There are no loud alerts or jarring sounds that startle the user. Bide creates a reassuring pause, helping prevent the initial misstep that often leads to a fall.
The impact: Confidence, safety, and independence
Beyond safety, Bide restores something many older adults lose after a fall: confidence.
Many older adults fear getting out of bed at night after experiencing a fall. This fear can lead to reduced mobility and decreased quality of life. Bide helps reverse this pattern by making the bedroom a safer environment.
Users in trials shared that:
- They felt more confident moving at night
- The device helped them slow down and take their time
- The lighting reduced their fear of losing balance
- The voice messages felt calming and reassuring
Caregivers also noted a reduction in nighttime anxiety.
Families caring for loved ones with dementia found that voice guidance lowered nighttime confusion and wandering.
Importantly, no adverse incidents were reported during community testing, reinforcing Bide’s safety and usability.
How Bide came to life
Bide is the brainchild of Dr. Tom Adler, a GP with over 30 years of experience. After witnessing countless patients suffer life-changing injuries from falls and seeing similar situations in his own family, he set out to build a solution to reduce preventable nighttime accidents.
Early prototypes evolved steadily, supported by the Derbyshire Dales Rural Innovation Grant Scheme under the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Today, Bide is being refined in partnership with Ignitec, a respected design and technology consultancy.
Bide has also gained recognition for its potential in elder care. Trials in community health services and positive feedback from users have reinforced its credibility as a real-world, practical tool for elder care.
What’s next for Bide?
The next phase of Bide focuses on refinement and broader adoption. The team aims to introduce improvements based on user feedback, including enhanced lighting, more responsive sensors, and even simpler message recording.
Future goals include:
- Wider availability through care organisations
- Improved durability for long-term use
- Expanded testing across different age groups and health conditions
- Continued collaboration with product designers and healthcare partners
If nighttime safety is a concern for your loved ones, Bide represents a quiet but meaningful shift: Technology that protects without intruding and supports independence without taking control.
