World Pharmacists Day 2025: From counters to clicks, e-pharmacies are redefining access to care

On World Pharmacists Day 2025, discover how e-pharmacies in India are transforming access to medicines, attracting investor interest, and evolving into full-stack healthtech ecosystems.
World pharmacists day

Every year on September 25th, World Pharmacists Day reminds us of the quiet but powerful role pharmacists play in our health journeys. They are more than medicine dispensers. They are advisors, safety nets, and often the first point of care when we need help.

This year, while we applaud the trusted pharmacists in our neighborhoods, it’s equally important to recognise the digital pharmacists behind e-pharmacies.

They are making sure medicines reach the right patients, at the right time. Whether that’s in a crowded metro or a small town miles away from the nearest hospital.

The expanding role of pharmacists

Pharmacists have always been the bridge between doctors and patients. From double-checking prescriptions to guiding on dosage and side effects, they ensure safer outcomes.

But today, thanks to technology, their role has expanded:

  • Digital prescriptions cut down errors.
  • AI tools help identify drug interactions.
  • Telepharmacy services make expert advice available anywhere.

Pharmacists are no longer confined to counters; They’re becoming enablers of digital healthcare access.

E-Pharmacies: More than medicine delivery

E-pharmacies have transformed how we think about buying medicines. What started as convenience—ordering with a few clicks—has evolved into something much bigger:

  • Access: Patients in tier-2 and tier-3 towns can now get the same access as metro cities.
  • Affordability: Transparent pricing and availability of generics make treatment easier on the pocket.
  • Reliability: Verified prescriptions and digital records reduce risks.

No wonder India’s e-pharmacy market is on a growth sprint. Depending on the source, estimates project it to touch USD 4.5 billion by 2025 (IBEF) and could go as high as USD 27 billion by 2029 (IndustryARC).

Whatever the number, one thing is clear: the demand is undeniable.

Investor interest & market momentum

The promise of e-pharmacies hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Over the last five years, we’ve seen heavy funding in players like PharmEasy, Tata 1mg, and NetMeds. Reliance and Tata have already placed their bets with acquisitions and scale-ups. And PharmEasy’s unicorn status has put the sector firmly on the global radar.

While the funding environment has cooled in 2024–25, investor interest hasn’t vanished. It’s just shifting towards platforms that are evolving into sustainable, full-stack healthtech ecosystems.

From pharmacies to healthtech platforms

Here’s where the story gets exciting. E-pharmacies are no longer just about medicines. Many have already expanded into:

  • Diagnostics: booking tests and accessing lab reports online.
  • Teleconsultations: speaking with doctors virtually.
  • Chronic care management: reminders, monitoring, and ongoing support.

This evolution is turning them into digital health hubs. A one-stop solution for patients to manage their health end-to-end.

What the future holds

India’s Digital Health Mission, rising chronic disease burden, and deeper internet penetration mean e-pharmacies will only become more embedded in everyday care.

They aren’t replacing pharmacists; they’re amplifying their role, making care faster, more efficient, and more accessible.

So this World Pharmacists Day 2025, let’s celebrate both:

  • The trusted pharmacists who continue to guide us at the counter.
  • And the e-pharmacies that ensure in this digital era, medicines and care reach patients wherever they are.

Pharmacy is no longer just about dispensing drugs; It’s about building the backbone of a connected, tech-enabled health system. And that’s worth applauding.
