Tech guru Bryan Johnson is on a mission to reverse the effects of ageing with his Project Blueprint. Spending $2 million in a year, Johnson and his team of doctors have achieved astounding results—tests show the 45-year-old has the fitness of an 18-year-old.

Have they discovered the secret of anti-ageing? Are they on the way to unlocking the key to ageing?

Let’s explore this next-gen anti-ageing technology in detail.

An update on Johnson’s new controversial experiment for longevity [June 2023]

To further his ambitious pursuit of age reversal, Johnson underwent a blood/plasma swapping treatment with his son Talmage’s blood.

In this procedure, Talmage provided a litre of his blood, which was processed into separate components—liquid plasma, red and white blood cells and platelets. Johnson, after having his blood drained, received Talmage’s plasma. Richard, Johnson’s 70-year-old father, underwent the same procedure afterwards.

The controversial concept of using plasma for anti-ageing gained attention through experiments on mice. When young and old mice shared a circulatory system, the older mice exhibited cognitive, metabolic, and bone structure improvements, while the younger mice experienced benefits from frequent blood donation.

While blood plasma is commonly given to patients experiencing trauma, burns, shock, liver disease and clotting deficiencies as it increases blood volume and helps prevent shock and blood clots, the effectiveness of plasma swapping as a longevity technique for humans remains inconclusive, and many researchers view it sceptically.

Biochemist Charles Brenner from the City of Hope National Medical Center expressed reservations about plasma swapping, calling it “gross, evidence-free and relatively dangerous.”

Project Blueprint: What is it?

Project Blueprint is an anti-ageing plan created by Bryan Johnson and his team of 30 doctors. The program involves a rigorous daily regimen of supplements, exercise and bodily tests, costing Johnson up to $2 million annually. Paying this hefty amount, he has been able to regain his youthfulness, astounding scientists across the world.

Bryan Johnson’s age reversal results

Project Blueprint has shown remarkable results in just two years. Johnson’s team reports a reduction of at least five years in his overall biological age. Doctors have observed that Johnson, whose current age is 45 years, has:

  • The heart of a 37-year-old
  • The skin of a 28-year-old
  • The lung capacity and fitness of an 18-year-old
  • The gum inflammation of a 17-year-old
  • Rate of night-time erections like that of a teenager’s

The anti-ageing regimen also has a profound impact on his quality of life—he has been feeling more energetic, stable and healthier than ever before.

What is the secret behind Johnson’s astounding age reversal results?

Under Project Blueprint, Johnson follows a strict regimen that takes anti-ageing to the next level. Here’s what he does:

  • Wakes up at 5 am every day
  • Takes two dozen supplements and medicines, including zinc and a microdose of lithium for brain health
  • Works out for an hour
  • Drinks green juice laced with creatine and collagen peptides
  • Brushes and flosses his teeth while rinsing with tea-tree oil and antioxidant gel
  • Then, he carries on with his regular activities.
  • At bedtime, Johnson wears glasses that block blue light for two hours.

His plan involves a strict vegan diet of 1,977 calories per day, daily exercise, high-intensity exercise three times a week and a consistent sleep schedule. It also includes dozens of medical procedures, supplements and medicines.

He undergoes frequent, often painful, medical procedures such as blood tests, MRIs, ultrasounds and colonoscopies. He also measures his weight, body mass index, body fat, blood glucose levels and heart-rate variations daily.

He even gets hooked up to a machine that counts the number of night-time erections. And that’s not all; Johnson undergoes aesthetic treatments such as weekly acid peels and laser treatments and gets fat injected into his face to build ‘fat scaffolding.’

Johnson’s intense daily regimen of supplements, meals, exercise and bodily tests has led him to take over 33,537 images of his bowels, discover that his eyelashes are shorter than average, and probe the thickness of his carotid artery.

Although his daily routine might seem insane, Johnson loves everything about the project. He treats his body like a professional athlete. Unlike most athletes, Johnson never allows himself to cheat or indulge in unhealthy foods, and his body fat hovers around five per cent.

This strict lifestyle may seem torturous to most, but Johnson has never been happier. He credits his strict routine and constant medical procedures for helping him achieve better health and happiness.

Why Bryan Johnson started Project Blueprint?

Johnson’s journey towards creating Project Blueprint is rooted in his personal struggle to take control of his health. Before selling his company Braintree to PayPal for $800 million in 2013, Johnson faced a severe downturn in his mental and physical well-being. He was overweight, depressed and almost suicidal, which he attributed to stress and working long hours.

In an interview with The Independent, Johnson shared how he came up with the idea of creating a system that could take better care of his health than he could himself. He wanted to know what would happen if he could measure and monitor his organs and let them ‘speak for themselves’ about what they need to be in an ‘ideal state.’ He eventually built a medical suite in his Venice, California home and hired a team of 30 doctors who work collaboratively across all his body’s functions.

What started as a simple way of taking control of his own life eventually led to something more rigorous. Johnson’s interest in pursuing eternal youth was driven by a desire to improve his own health and well-being.

Criticisms and controversies around Project Blueprint

Despite being a multi-million-dollar initiative aimed at reversing ageing and extending life, Project Blueprint has attracted criticisms and controversies. Many people have ridiculed Johnson’s desire to be 18 again, and some see his spending millions on age-reversing efforts as vain and self-absorbed. Also, the program’s high-cost means inaccessibility has garnered criticism from many who view it as a privilege reserved for the wealthy.

Johnson defends the Blueprint project, arguing that it is not just about him or the wealthy but about the future of humanity. He believes that by building systems that allow us to be our best, we can move forward together. Johnson’s ultimate goal is to automate perfection, creating systems that handle critical bodily functions, leaving us with more energy and excitement to think about our future.

Johnson emphasises that the core of Project Blueprint centres around healthy habits such as exercise, a fixed sleep schedule, and a healthy diet that anyone can adopt.

Bottom line

While Project Blueprint is facing severe criticism, it remains an intriguing and ambitious venture that could revolutionise the way we approach health and longevity. Only time will tell its long-term effects.

To encourage others to prioritise their health, Johnson has created Rejuvenation Olympics, a website that ranks individuals fighting against ageing based on their epigenetic data. By making it a competition, he hopes to inspire more people to join the fight against ageing and prioritise healthy habits.
